The number of recorded swine flu cases in Northern Ireland has increased rapidly during the last week, according to the Public Health Agency.

The agency’s official data shows that the number of cases has simply doubled from 56 to 129. But it is said that the real number of the cases is a lot higher, according to the BBC.

According to the Public Health Agency, the symptoms of flue are as sudden fever, headache, muscle aches, a dry cough and sore throat, which stays with the patient for 2 weeks. The flu has made people having problems in respiration as well.

Hospitals have been under pressure due to a large number of people experiencing flu. At Belfast City Hospital there were 26 trolleys waiting on Thursday and people were asked to stay away from their local hospital unless they feel really bad.

A Consultant in Health Protection, at the Public Health Agency said that they saw a “continued significant rise” in the number of people coming to the hospitals for seasonal flu cases.

“This is to be expected at this time of year, given the recent particularly cold weather and the circulation of several respiratory viruses…Despite the recent rises, our current flu activity is less than the peaks noted in the past two years. As we expect the flu viruses to continue to circulate for the next few weeks, it is vital that at-risk individuals get vaccinated.”
