A Polish prosecutor shot himself in the head after speaking to reporters in his office Monday, a military spokesman said.

The military prosecutor, Col. Mikolaj Przybyl, was severely injured but still alive when medical services arrived at his office in the western city of Poznan, Polish Army spokesman Slawomir Schewe said.

Przybyl had just given an impassioned statement to reporters defending his staff and denying they had eavesdropped on journalists as part of a military probe into leaks related to the 2010 plane crash in Russia that killed the Polish president, Schewe said.

After defending the military investigation, he asked for a five-minute break. Minutes later, reporters heard a gunshot.

Dr. Leslaw Lenartowicz, a doctor at the hospital where Przybyl was being treated, said the prosecutor had an injury to his skull, but was in stable condition and conscious Monday.
